Jio is much more than just telecom services.. |
Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (R-Jio), which plans to launch its fourth generation (4G) telecom services in India by December, is building a customer interface and app store bundled into one online service called Jio World, itself available as an app.
Jio World will serve as a guide to the entire Jio ecosystem. Reliance Jio may have dropped the R from its branding,Mint recently reported.
The service will bundle the Jio family of apps, upcoming deals and account-related updates. Most of the services can be accessed on Jio World through two main icons, mZone and Jio Drawer, said an executive with R-Jio who tested the service when it was live in August. He did not wish to be named.
“While Jio World will be a platform for accessing R-Jio’s apps, it will also have details about upcoming apps, R-Jio account related information, data usage of a customer, time and date of recharge, etc.,” said a second R-Jio executive familiar with the matter who also asked not to be identified. “So far all the apps of R-Jio are available on mstore.ril.com, which will be later migrated to Jio World, but access to Jio World will be restricted to only R-Jio customers.”
Currently, Android phones do not allow download of these apps from the above-mentioned website. An Apple device allows the download but operational access is blocked as its requires a Jio-verified phone number and identification name. All these apps are still being tested.
Some of the apps planned are Jio News (for accessing news), Jio Beats (for music), Jio On-Demand (for watching TV shows and movies), Jio Play (to watch HDTV channels), and Jio Drive (for cloud storage).
“Jio is much more than just telecom services... We followed an integrated business strategy from the very beginning, and today, Jio is capable of offering a unique combination of telecom, high speed data, digital commerce, media and payment services,” Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd, had said during the company’s annual shareholder meeting in June, while informing shareholders about the company’s upcoming apps.
So far only two of R-Jio’s apps are available on Google Play Store and Apple iTunes store—Jio Chat and Jio Candidate.
Jio Chat was launched in April on the line of WhatsApp and has 1 million downloads so far on the Google Play store; Jio Candidates is an app specific to prospective R-Jio employees.
R-Jio, which plans to roll out 4G operations in December, is preparing for a big-bang launch and will offer “unique combination of products, services and applications on the Jio platform” at launch, the company said while announcing its fiscal first-quarter results.
